Wow -- Michigan beat the Geckos! Final score, 41-35. It was an exciting game, and I admit, I wasn't thinking Michigan would be up to it. But they were, and Lloyd Carr gets to ride off into the sunset with a bowl victory.

Okay, now Michigan is up 28-14 over the Geckos. Even I'm a little surprised. Hopefully, they'll keep it up.
What's with the crappy fake Blues Brothers on the Capital One Bowl halftime show?!
Michigan's up 21-14! Some bad plays, though, made it look pretty grim. Fumble, interceptions, etc. But we're back on top going at the end of the half.
Michigan scores. 14-14. It was looking grim for a few minutes -- Michigan was flailing about on offense and defense, but they managed to tie it back up.
Geckos scored again. 14-7 Geckos.
Crap, the Geckos scored! 7-7.
No score from the Florida Geckos on their first drive! Still 7-0 Michigan!
Michigan just scored the first touchdown, and looked very good doing so. 7-0!
The National Weather Service was right. We were pretty much pounded by snow last night. Oh, sure, my dad, who grew up in Buffalo, would say that the 8 inches or so of snow we got is nothing compared to the kind of snow they see all the time in Buffalo. And he's right, technically, but then, he lives in Florida now, so I'm not sure he gets to be all superior about how we're "too wussy" about snow here in Michigan.
Anyway, this will end up being the perfect day to stay bundled up inside, watching my beloved Michigan Wolverines play in the Capital One Bowl against the University of Florida Geckos. Today's game marks the final game coached by Lloyd Carr, who is retiring as Michigan's head coach. Now, I've made no secret that I was hoping that Lloyd would move on, but I still think he did do a lot of good for the program, and I hope he can go out with a win. The Geckos, though, are likely to put up a hell of a fight, what with their superstar Heisman-Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow. Given our lackluster season, the Geckos' power, and the fact that the entire coaching staff was canned by the new head coach, Rich Rodriguez, I'm thinking it will be an uphill battle. Still, I'm hoping for a win. Go Blue!
The BCS, in its infinite wisdom, decided that Florida should somehow move from #3 to #2 ahead of Michigan for the national championship game. Actually, it was coaches and sportswriters who made that decision -- the BCS computer rankings had Florida and Michigan ranked dead even (and even that is a bit sketchy, to me). There were all kinds of rationales for it -- "Michigan already had its chance to play Ohio State" being chief among them. But the BCS was never about "giving someone else a chance," it was about having the two best teams in college football play for the title. Few people, even those who justify the result, seem to argue that the two best teams are playing. Just that "someone else is getting a chance."
We'll see if they use that logic to change the matchup in the Super Bowl for two teams that played in the regular season. Oh -- wait, right, they actually have a playoff system in professional football. Well, college football, too, in every other division but I-A. But somehow, it just "wouldn't work" there. Translation? Someone who's getting paid now wouldn't be getting paid later.
I can't say I'm very surprised, nor is it at all a big disappointment to play in the Rose Bowl. But they do need to do something about this crazy system.
Well, amazingly, UCLA pulled it off! The highly unlikely loss makes it more likely that my beloved Wolverines will make it into the national championship game. Of course, it would help if Florida lost.
My beloved alma mater's football team, the University of Michigan Wolverines, defeated the Wisconsin Weasels (or whatever inferior woodland creature they use as a mascot) at home in the Big Ten opener.
Things are looking a lot better this year. Ol' Coach Lloyd made some changes in his coaching staff, changes that seem to have been for the better. An otherwise gray Saturday has been made that much brighter.
