Bad Beat (n) : In Texas Hold 'em Poker, when one's starting hand is stronger than one's opponent's starting hand, and yet, the opponent wins in the end anyway.

Earlier, I mentioned that I entered the free PokerStars online tournament just for bloggers. I went through a bunch of hands with mediocre hands. And then I get an Ace and a King -- second best starting hand in Hold 'em. So I bet big. If you're not willing to risk it all on a big hand, you might as well not play. Almost everyone folded, just like I planned. Except one person. Turns out they had Ace Queen. Not really as good a hand as it seems. I had them dominated, and when they called my big bet with that, they were making a big mistake. Most of the time, AQ versus AK is going to lose. Not this time, though. Queen popped up on the turn, and I was out of luck. Bad Beat. I still had some chips left, but it didn't take too much longer for me to go out. Better luck next year, perhaps.
